We were commissioned with the planning and construction supervision of an energetic renovation of two residential buildings. The client's wish was to achieve a unifying design for the two residential buildings, which were built in different eras, in addition to the energetic upgrading. The residential building parallel to Fasanenstrasse dates from the reconstruction phase in Berlin after the Second World War, around 1962, and is architecturally rational and simple in keeping with the period. The house in Pariser Strasse was built around 1985 and had typical stylistic features of the time, such as the partially tiled composite thermal insulation facade.
We connect both houses with a new balcony tower directly at the corner of both buildings. The corner flats in the building from the 1980s previously had no balcony and also had a poorly lit living space. We have opened up this living space via new large French doors, with exit onto the new, terrace-sized balconies. The balcony framework has the same sloping shape towards Fasanenstraße as the old balconies of the house from the 1960s. Thus, the new balcony system becomes a connector of both houses. The new colour scheme extends over both houses and thus supports the ensemble effect. The built-over entrance area was architecturally defined with a new entrance gate and a floor-to-ceiling fence and delimited from the public street area. Over the years, climbing plants will green the balcony facade.
